The examination and treatment of suspected victims of child physical or sexual abuse requires specialized services. The FACT Center at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children is not a walk-in or self-referral center. Only the police and child protective services can refer a child to the FACT Center for a specialized sexual abuse evaluation. Inpatient or outpatient consultations in cases of suspected physical abuse require a referral from the police, child protective services, or the treating physician.

The Child Abuse Program provides medical and mental health evaluations and support for children who may been been victims of child maltreatment. Medical services include forensic medical evaluations of hospitalized patients, outpatient evaluation of suspected abuse, and second opinion consultative services. Mental Health services include forensic interviewing, psychological testing, forensic evaluation and brief psychotherapy, and parenting capacities. CAP provides multidisciplinary case review for all patients evaluation and expert medical and mental health testimony for child abuse cases. Additionally the program offers training opportunities for medical and mental health professionals.

The Child Protection Team (CPT) provides evaluative and consultative services to the medical community at large for children suspected of being abused or neglected. We serve as a referral source for CPS, law enforcement and mental health workers to provide medical evaluations as needed. All children admitted with suspicious injuries are evaluated by team members. In addition, a major aspect of the team's activities is to provide training in the area of child abuse and neglect for medical professionals and others who work with children.
