The Section on Child Abuse and
Neglect (SOCAN) was founded in 1990 and is dedicated to improving the care of
infants, children, and adolescents who are abused and neglected by providing an
educational forum for the discussion of problems and treatments relating to child
abuse and neglect and its prevention. In addition, objectives of the Section include
stimulating research in child abuse and neglect and serving in a consulting capacity
to the AAP Board of Directors on policy and other issues in this area.
Membership is open to of Fellows of the American Academy of Pediatrics who are
actively involved in some aspect of the study of the abuse and neglect of infants,
children, or adolescents and who are interested in contributing toward the objectives
of the Section. Affiliate membership is open to MDs, DOs, NPs, RNs, PAs not eligible
for AAP Fellowship in the Academy. They must devote at least 25% of their practice
to pediatric patients, and be active in the field of child abuse.
Membership in the section is
open to all Fellows of the Academy with an interest in child abuse and
neglect.Annual dues are just $40, which includes the quarterly newsletter,
SCAN.
