Council on Community Pediatrics

The Council on Community Pediatrics (COCP), founded as the Section on Community Pediatrics in 1970, stimulates interest, work, and research in the organization of health services for children and contributes to the development of guidelines and the maintenance of standards for community health programs. In addition, the council serves in a consulting capacity to the AAP Board of Directors on topics in community pediatrics. Membership in the council is open to all Fellows of the Academy with an interest in community pediatrics. The Council also accepts Specialty Fellows and Affiliate members. The Council on Community Pediatrics has more than 1700 members and continues to grow. Council membership applications are available online.

What's New:

Community Pediatrics Self-Assessment is debuted at the Pediatrics for the 21st Century Symposium at the 2007 NCE! The Community Pediatrics Self-Assessment was designed to help practicing pediatricians assess where they are in relation to community pediatrics activities as recommended in the COCP policy statement, The Pediatrician's Role in Community Pediatrics. For more information about the Community Pediatrics Self-Assessment, click here.

Council Activities:

Educational and Networking Opportunities: The Council holds an annual business meeting and a community pediatrics reception and awards ceremony at the AAP Annual Meeting. In addition, the Council sponsors educational sessions and activities at AAP national, state, and other conferences.

Promoting Community-based Initiatives: By applying for Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Funds and Healthy Tomorrows Partnership for Children Program grants, and networking with colleagues, Council members develop expertise in implementing community-based initiatives. The Council awards Mentorship and Technical Assistance Program (MTAP) grants to assist COCP members to improve their community pediatrics skills and for developing innovative programs within their community.

Recognition: Members can highlight activities in the biannual council newsletter. The Council also recognizes outstanding contributions to community pediatrics through the annual Job Lewis Smith Award, and other Council awards.
