Outstanding Achievement in the Application of Epidemiologic
Information to Child Health Advocacy Award
The Section on Epidemiology and the Council on Community Pediatrics
(COCP) co-sponsor the Outstanding Achievement in the Application
of Epidemiologic Information to Child Health Advocacy Award.
This award recognizes a pediatrician who has made outstanding
contributions toward advocating for children and child health
in the community through the effective use of epidemiologic
information as part of that advocacy.
Community-level health improvement projects and programs affect the health
of children beyond those served by an individual practice or clinic, and
the application of epidemiologic method implies that data have been effectively
used to characterize a health problem among children in the pediatrician’s
community. Examples include the use of data to draw public attention to
a health problem or to emphasize the need for intervention. The award
will not emphasize the sophistication of the epidemiologic technique.
The effectiveness of the application of advocating for community-level
child health action is the major emphasis. The intent of the reward is
to honor a specific accomplishment rather than a career achievement.
The recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award must be
a pediatrician who has demonstrated effective use of epidemiologic
data in public health advocacy. Members of the Awards Committee
and of the Section Epidemiology and Council on Community Pediatrics
Executive Committees of the American Academy of Pediatrics are
not eligible to receive this award while they are in the said
role. The recipient will be presented with the award and an
honorarium at the AAP National Conference and Exhibition. All
travel expenses will be reimbursed.
