WHAT'S NEW:
Rural Health Special Interest Group List Serv Discussion: March 2008: Selected Internet Resources for Developmental, Psychosocial and Social Capital Screening for Rural Pediatricians
The audiofile for the Collaborative Models in Rural Pediatrics:
Integrating Mental Health Teleconference (sponsored by the
Task Force on Mental Health, the Rural Health SIG of the Council
on Community Pediatrics and Bright Futures) is available
on the IMPACT website.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of the Rural Health Special Interest Group (RH SIG)
is to further the mission of the Council on Community Pediatrics
and the AAP by identifying, prioritizing, and promoting educational
and training opportunities related to rural child health. The
activity of the RH SIG is to work to educate the members of
the Council and the Academy on ways to improve the health outcomes
of rural children through the mobilization and collaboration
of AAP fellows, residents, other health professionals, families,
and community organizations.

Goals
1) improve ACCESS and decrease health care DISPARITIES for Rural
Children and
2) provide a communication, training, and professional support
network for rural pediatricians within the AAP.
Objectives
Communication:
Maintain an electronic communication network through the e-mail
Listserv and website providing e-mail interaction, monthly hot
topic information, web references, and grant information on rural
community child health care issues and best models.
Education:
Promote relevant rural pediatrics CME courses/ roundtables through
the NCE and State/ Regional CATCH or AAP meetings.
Recruitment:
Facilitate rural preceptorships for medical students and residents
with RH SIG pediatricians working with state Offices of
Rural Health, medical school pediatric clubs or pediatric residencies/
Section on Residents.
Retention:
The Rural Health SIG is very interested in strategies
to improve the recruitment and retention of rural pediatricians.
CHALLENGES:
- Providing pediatricians in rural areas with CME programs,
venues, and topics geared specifically to their unique population
and practice.
- Identifying a funding source to help support the development
and presentation of Regional RH SIG programs at existing state
AAP or CATCH meetings.
- Identifying and securing funding (mini-grants) to stimulate
individual rural health medical home projects among pediatricians
to increase access and decrease health outcomes disparities.

If you are already a member of the Council on Community Pediatrics and would like to join the RH SIG, please send an email with you full name, email address, and AAP member ID number to cocp@aap.org requesting that you be added to the RH SIG.
To join the Rural Health SIG you must be a member of the Council
on Community Pediatrics. If you are already a member of the AAP and would like to become
a COCP member, join online by:
1. Go to www.aap.org/moc and login with your AAP ID and password.
2. Click on "Member Community".
3. Click on "Join a Section or Council" under Section, Council & Committee
Information.
4. Choose "Council on Community Pediatrics", answer a few questions, and click "Submit".
