The William E. Ladd Medal
represents the highest honor that the Section on Surgery bestows on a physician
in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of pediatric surgery.
The Section awards the 2007 Ladd Medal to James A. O'Neill,
Jr., MD, Foshee Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the Section
of Surgical Sciences at Vanderbilt. He currently teaches and co-directs the Meharry/Vanderbilt
Alliance. Dr O'Neill is a member of 33 professional societies with numerous leadership
positions including Chairman of the Section on Surgery of the Academy, President
of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, and Director of the American Board
of Surgery. He serves on numerous editorial boards and has over 300 publications
including the 2 Vol. Pediatric Surgery through several editions. His principle
research interests have been trauma and burns, neonatal physiology, oncology,
biliary disorders, conjoined twins, vascular disorders and workforce issues. He
has received honors from seven universities and has given lectureships throughout
the world. |

Stephen L. Gans Distinguished Overseas Lectureship is given to encourage
sharing between Section members and pediatric surgeons from other countries and
to recognize achievements in the field of Pediatric surgery in other countries.
The 2007 Gans Award is presented to Dr Huimin Xia,
Chief Pediatric Surgeon, Professor and CEO of Guangzhou Children's Hospital, China.
He has been a pediatric surgeon for over 20 years, dealing with about 300 neonatal
surgeries every year. With the experiences of being trained overseas, he has made
many contributions in neonatal surgery fields in China, including congenital esophageal
atresia, biliary atresia, anorectal malformation and Hirschsprung's Disease. Dr
Xia is CEO of the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center and Editor of
the Chinese Journal of Pediatric Surgery. He has been elected an Executive Member
of the Pediatric Surgery Section and Chairman of the Neonatal Surgery Group of
the Chinese Medical Association.

Arnold M. Salzberg Mentorship Award
recognizes a pediatric surgeon who has distinguished him/her-self as a mentor
of pediatric surgical trainees. The 2007 Salzberg Award is presented to
Arnold
G. Coran, MD. He is the President of the World Federation of Associations
of Pediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS), a Co-Editor-in-Chief of Pediatric Surgery International,
an Associate Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, an Editor of the two
volume textbook "Pediatric Surgery", an Editor of "Essentials of
Pediatric Surgery", Co-Editor of "Rob & Smith's Pediatric Surgery",
an Editor of Principles of Pediatric Surgery", an Editor of "Care of
the Surgical Patient" and is the author of over 409 journal articles, 111
book chapters and 21 books. Dr Coran has contributed extensively in the fields
of Pediatric Surgery, Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Shock in Children, Bacterial
Translocation in the Neonate, and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in Pediatric
Respiratory Failure. Among his clinical research efforts are studies concerning
total body water and extra cellular fluid changes in infants receiving total parenteral
nutrition and neonatal respiratory failure, esophageal surgery in children, Hirschsprung's
Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and studies of cancer in children. Additionally,
Dr Coran has influenced his field through educational activities. He is the past
President of the Association of Pediatric Surgery Training Program Directors;
Senior Advisor of the Surgical Section of the Children's Cancer Study Group; and
a Founding Member of the Society for Pediatric Trauma.
