2009 USPS Scientific Awards Competition:
Rules and Abstract Form

Six scientific awards will be given to honor outstanding scientific and clinical research efforts by Uniformed Pediatricians at the Uniformed Services Pediatric Seminar, March 8-11, 2009 in Indianapolis, IN. These awards are sponsored by the Uniformed Services Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  The awards are:

The Ogden Bruton Award, which includes a $500 stipend and a plaque, is for the best paper by a Uniformed Service pediatrician on either basic science research or research on the development, evaluation, or application of an emerging technology in pediatrics.

The Andrew Margileth Award, which includes a $500 stipend and a plaque, is for the best pediatric paper by a Uniformed Services pediatrician documenting clinical findings or assessing clinical diagnostic studies, therapeutic regimens, and outcomes leading to improved quality of health care for children.

The Howard Johnson Award, which includes a $500 stipend and a plaque, is for the best paper by a Uniformed Services house officer on a pediatric topic. This award recognizes the extra dedication necessary to perform clinical research as a resident before fellowship training. Uniformed Service residents in other specialty training may compete for the Howard Johnson Award if their paper deals with a pediatric subject. Uniformed Service residents in other specialty training may compete for the Howard Johnson Award if their paper concerns a pediatric subject.

The Leo Geppert Award, which includes a $200 stipend and a plaque is split into 2 categories. The first category of the Geppert Award is the Geppert Research. It is presented to the Uniformed Services pediatric primary care provider who deals with a topic having major focus on pediatric primary care. This may include (but is not limited to) innovations in practice management, primary prevention, or educational interventions. The second category is the Geppert Case.  It consists of brief clinical reports (i.e. case reports). The Geppert Case report category will be the only category in which case reports will be accepted. If a case report is submitted in one of the other categories, it will be moved into the Geppert category. Both categories will be judged on the a) rationale, b) impact on the primary care of infants, children, and adolescents, c) innovative or prismatic insight into a common pediatric problem, and d) overall subjective written quality. Although the abstract format, guidelines, and submission deadlines are similar to the other award categories, prospective and/or controlled trials are not appropriate for this category.

The Val G. Hemming Award
, which includes a $200 stipend, a plaque, and a travel award enabling the student to participate in the USPS Annual Meeting, will be presented to the USUHS, HPSP, or ROTC funded medical student submitting the best paper on a pediatric-related topic in clinical or basic science research, excluding case reports. This award supports the recruitment of medical students to the field of pediatrics and recognizes the additional effort and dedication necessary to perform research during medical school training. This award is sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics at USUHS. The Hemming award is open to all medical students funded for medical school training through the Health Professions Scholarship Program and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Medical students in reserve status (HPSP or ROTC) are eligible.

The research for all categories must have been completed while the author was on active duty.  Collaborative work with several investigators should only be submitted with the permission of all investigators. Awards will be presented only to the first authors of the winning abstracts.

The first author of each submitted abstract should: a) be the principal investigator for the submitted research, and b) be the first author on any published paper resulting from the presented research. If the first author is not a member of the Uniformed Services Pediatric Section, sponsorship by a Section member is required (except for the Val Hemming Award: no USPS member sponsor necessary in this category). Before submission of any abstract, the first author should ensure that if the abstract is accepted as a semifinalist, a formal paper will be submitted to the final judges, and that he/she will be able to present the paper at the Uniformed Services Pediatric Seminar and that funding will be provided through their respective service or agency.

In addition to the above awards, there will be a $200 stipend and Certificate of Merit awarded to the two runners-up in the Bruton, Margileth, and Johnson competitions, and a $100 stipend and Certificate of Merit to the two runners-up in the Geppert competition. Selection of semifinalists and award winners will be completed by a panel of judges including the Scientific Awards Committee, retired academic pediatricians from the Uniformed Services, reserve pediatricians at university medical centers, and/or civilian consultants. Each Uniformed Service will be represented in the judging.

For all but the Leo Geppert Award the selection criteria for the semifinalists and winners will be judged by 1) the hypothesis and objectives are clearly stated, 2) data presented support the hypothesis, 3) conclusions are justified and worthwhile, and 4) overall quality of the paper.

Authors are encouraged to also submit their research to other scientific meetings. Research that has already been submitted for publication is still eligible for these awards. However, previously published research will not be accepted.

Abstracts must be submitted no later than 1 October 2008 to the AAP.

Semifinalists will be notified no later than 7 November 2008 of their selection for oral or poster presentation at the USPS.

The papers of the six semifinalists in the Margileth, Johnson, and Bruton competition must be received in the coordinating office no later than 1 December 2008. The format of the paper will be identical to the style used by PEDIATRICS. (Please do not send your paper to PEDIATRICS)

Please note that the top three papers in the Margileth, Johnson, and Bruton categories will be oral presentations. The next three papers will be poster presentations. Semifinalists will be notified no later than 1 February 2009 of their selection for oral or poster presentation. All six of the Leo Geppert Award abstract finalists will be poster presentations. The winning submission for the Hemming Award will present their research as a poster presentation at the USPS Annual meeting with recognition at the meeting's general session.

Further details on the poster presentation will be provided after the final judging process has been completed.
