International Travel Grants

Each academic year the AAP will have a minimum of twelve five-hundred dollar ($500.00) grants to be awarded in two cycles (minimum of 6 grants per cycle). These grants will be awarded to residents who wish to complete a clinical pediatric elective in the developing world during residency. Resident applicants must be enrolled in pediatric residency training programs that are approved for credit toward certification by the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or La Corporation Professionelle des Medecins du Quebec.

The awarding of the grant is based solely on this application and the accompanying form from your program director. IMPORTANT: Once your application is processed, it will be forwarded to your program director along with the link to the recommendation form. Please follow up with your program director and make sure he or she has received the link and has submitted their recommendation. Your application will be considered incomplete without your program director's completed recommendation form.

The International Travel Grants will be awarded within two cycles, due September 15 and March 15. Recipients of the September cycle will be notified by November 15 and recipients of the March cycle will be notified by May 15 each year. The selection committee is composed of members from the AAP Section on International Child Health and the Section on Residents. The online application will be available year round.

Congratulations to the 2007 International Travel Grant Recipients

  5. A list of written objectives should be developed prior to departure.
  6. A preceptor identified in the host country.

  8. If you are not fluent in the host country's language, arrangements must be made for translators.
  9. Secure travel documents such as passports, visas and medical licenses before departure.
  10. Arrange housing and medical care for yourself.
  11. You should be formally evaluated while abroad, primarily to identify satisfaction of your objectives.
  12. Upon return, submit a written summary of your experiences to the program director, and formally evaluate your elective with appropriate faculty.
  13. If pictures of families/kids are taken, please have them sign the photo release form.
  14. Post-residency training fellows and previous recipients are not eligible to apply.

Please do not apply for this grant if you are being paid for this rotation in addition to your regular resident salary. However, you may seek additional funding for your rotation in addition to this grant.

If you are selected to receive the grant, we may use your report for an article in AAP News, the International Child Health Newsletter or Resident Report.

Upon return from your elective, submit a copy of your summary to Kimberley VandenBrook at kvandenbrook@aap.org or 800/433-9016 ext. 7134.

Good luck and safe travels!

The resident international elective travel grant is jointly supported by the AAP Section on International Child Health, the AAP Section on Residents, and Douglas Heiner, MD, FAAP.
