Section on Residents Mission Statement: The AAP Resident Section will advocate for residents, develop leadership within the Section, and educate Residents on how to advocate for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.

The Section on Residents was founded in 1989 and enables residents, post residency training fellows, and medical students of the AAP to meet for the purpose of developing ideas and generating programs and projects which will improve the care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.

The Section was formed to provide a voice for physicians in training and to offer a forum for the discussion of common interests and problems. The Resident Section publishes Resident Report, twice a year and a bimonthly email newsletter both of which update resident membership on section activities and issues. The Section currently has over 9,000 members.
The Section provides educational programming at the National Conference and Exhibition of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The all-day programs consist of a keynote address, two education breakout sessions, district meetings, elections, and general sessions.

The Section has over twenty liaisons to AAP Committees, Sections, and outside organizations. These liaisons report to the Section either in person at one of the two Resident Executive Committee meeting per year and/or in writing to be included in the agenda book or for inclusion in the Resident Report.

The Resident Section serves in a consulting capacity to the AAP Board of Directors and makes recommendations regarding policy statements related to pediatric residency training, and other matters relating to the education and well being of pediatric residents.
The Section's Executive Committee are special guests and participate in the Annual Chapter Forum which serves as an open forum for the exchange of ideas, and for the debate and discussion of burning issues. It is an opportunity for the Section to have input to the Executive Board of the AAP.

Some of the main initiatives of the Resident Section include rewarding residents for local advocacy projects, supporting residents with grants for international electives, NCE travel, financial-need based scholarships, and for residents wishing to complete research during residency. The Section has several subcommittees charged with marketing resident/Academy services, recognizing local residents, and providing educational resources to residents.
The Section's actively recruits medical students into pediatrics and supports residents in their role as teacher.
