AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS
2007-2008 Strategic Plan

MISSION/VISION/VALUES

The MISSION of the AAP is to Attain optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. To accomplish this mission, the Academy shall support the professional needs of its members.

A Core Values statement lists the organization's beliefs. These statements are essential, because organizations like the AAP function in a competitive and complex environment. When an organization comes to a fork in the road, or even loses its way, the core values serve as a map, a "lighthouse in the fog", so the leadership can find its way back home.

CORE VALUES: We believe:

o In the inherent worth of all children
o Children are our most enduring and vulnerable legacy.
o Children deserve optimal health and the highest quality health care.
o Pediatricians are the best qualified to provide child health care.
o The American Academy of Pediatrics is the organization to advance child health
and well-being.

VISION: Children have optimal health and well-being and are valued by society. Academy members practice the highest quality health care and experience professional satisfaction and personal well-being.

Current child health priorities for 2007-2008 include:

o Special Health Care Needs
o Foster Care
o Oral Health
o Disaster Preparedness
o Mental Health
o Obesity
o Immunizations
