The Department of Community and Specialty Pediatrics (DOCSP) provides
staff support and technical assistance to national committees, sections,
councils, task forces, and work groups that develop policy statements,
clinical/technical reports, manuals, and other resource materials on
child health for medical professionals. The DOCSP staff administer council/committee/section/task
force activities, assisting them in the development and implementation
of special projects and programs. Departmental staff manage the development
of numerous professional manuals, including the Red Book; Handbook
of Common Poisonings in Children; School Health: Policy and Practice;
Injury Prevention and Control for Children and Youth; Substance Abuse:
A Guide for Health Professionals, Pediatric Nutrition Handbook; Handbook
of Pediatric Environmental Health; Emergency Medical Services for Children;
Guidelines for Health Supervision; Adoption of Children; and Health
in Child Care. The manual Guidelines for Perinatal Care is
developed in cooperation with the American College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists; Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety
Performance Standards was developed in collaboration with the American
Public Health Association; and Care of the Young Athlete was
developed ini conjunction with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The Classification of Child and Adolescent Mental Diagnoses in Primary
Care: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Primary Care (DSM-PC)
child and adolescent version was developed with liaison representation
from 8 other organizations.
There are 6 divisions within the DOCSP. The Division of Safety and
Health Promotion (DSHP) provides staffing, policy analysis, and technical
assistance for the following committees: Bioethics; Child Abuse and
Neglect; Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention; Pediatric AIDS;
School Health; Sports Medicine and Fitness. The division also provides
staffing support for 5 multidisciplinary sections including Bioethics,
Child Abuse and Neglect, Injury and Poison Prevention, School Health,
and Sports Medicine and Fitness. The division oversees, implements,
and evaluates several national grant-funded programs of the Academy.
The Division of Developmental Pediatrics and Preventive Services (DOPPS)
provides staffing for the following committees: Adolescence; Early Childhood,
Adoption, and Dependent Care; Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family
Health; and Substance Abuse. The division also assists the following
3 sections including Adolescent Health, Adoption and Foster Care, and
Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. The division oversees and implements
many grant-funded programs including Bright Futures.
The Division of Technical and Medical Services (DTMS) manages the policy,
program, and advocacy activities of 5 national committees and 13 subspecialty
sections. Included within the division's complement of committees are
the Committees on Drugs, Environmental Health, Genetics, Infectious
Diseases, and Nutrition. The AAP subspecialty sections supported by
the division include Allergy & Immunology, Cardiology and Cardiac
Surgery, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Dermatology, Endocrinology,
Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Genetics and Birth Defects, Hematology-Oncology,
Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Pediatric Pulmonology, and
Rheumatology. In addition to primary staffing duties associated with
committee and section business, division staff routinely respond to
technical queries, coordinate specialized educational programs and projects,
administer contracts and purchase orders, and work in collaboration
with the AAP Department of Federal Affairs.
The Division of Hospital and Surgical Services (DHSS) is responsible
for staffing and management of the Surgical Advisory Panel, the Council
on Sections, and the Council on Sections Management Committee. The
division is the home for several large AAP committees and sections
including the Committee on Fetus and Newborn, the Committee and the
Section on Emergency Medicine, the Committee and the Section on Hospital
Care, the Sections on Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Critical Care,
Neurological Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Otolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery, Perinatal Pediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Radiology,
Surgery, Transport Medicine, and Urology. The division assists the
Division of CME in planning and presenting several CME courses including
NeoPREP, PRE-PEM, the Perinatal Workshop, and the Transport Medicine
course. The division sections have also sponsored courses on critical
care coding and preparing for life in academics. The division also
oversees grant-funded programs and national public awareness campaigns
on prematurity and SIDS.
The Division of Community Health
Services (DOCHS) is responsible for breastfeeding initiatives, Pediatrics
Collaborative Care Program, Immunization Initiatives, the Committee
on Native American Child Health, the Section on Breastfeeding, and
the Community Pediatrics Action Group. This division also houses the
Childhood Immunization Support Program (CISP) Immunization Advisory
Team, Healthy Child Care America, Mental Health Initiatives, and the
Mental Health Task Force, and SIDS in Child Care Project.
The Division of Children with
Special Needs is responsible for Medical Home Screening programs and
grants, Medical Home Training Programs, the Shriners Medical Home-Subspecialist
Research Project, Developmental Screening/AutismCDC/NCBDDD Screening
and Surveillance in the Medical Home Grant, the Council on Children
with Disabilities.
