A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Web page for the Committee on Pediatric Education (COPE).

The purpose of this Committee is to act as a think tank within the American Academy of Pediatrics for discussion, consensus building and collaboration on emerging issues facing pediatric education. This includes proposed policy, research, curriculum and faculty development, outcome measures, and practice issues as they relate to pediatric education. The Committee, in coordination with member organizations, reviews and monitors the field of pediatric education, identifies gaps or areas in need of enhancement, and recommends appropriate strategies and/or organizational structures. These activities serve the common goal of advancing pediatric education.

The current agenda of this Committee includes three core themes addressing:

1. Proactively support the Academy's multiple initiatives in the field of international pediatrics, particularly as they relate to educational activities.

2. Examine issues related to the educational needs of practicing pediatricians who wish to re-enter the physician workforce after an extended leave of absence.

3. Work with appropriate external organizations and AAP groups on educational issues related to the provision of culturally effective pediatric care, including the elimination of health disparities.

4. Explore opportunities to enhance medical education at all levels via Web-based platforms. This analysis should include the role of these platforms to assist residency and fellowship programs in implementing the 6 ACGME core competencies through curricula, toolboxes, and other resources.

5. Continue to foster ongoing communication and collaboration among COPE member organizations and groups about current educational and policy issues in pediatrics.

I hope you find the resources below helpful, and I would encourage you to check the Web page periodically for updated information on educational policy, curricula, and research.

Cordially,

C. Robin Walker, MB, ChB, FAAP, FRCP(C)
Chairperson
