Pediatricians can play a key role in recognizing the importance of family in a patient's life, and help make caregiving and decision-making easier for patients, families, physicians, nurses and other health care professionals. In the policy statement, "Patient- and Family-Centered Care and the Pediatrician's Role," in the February 2012 Pediatrics (published online Jan. 30), the American Academy of Pediatrics states that patient- and family-centered care is a necessary component of clinical decision-making, and that patients and their families should collaborate with health care professionals or team members in all aspects of care, allowing them to participate to the level they choose. Parents or guardians should have the option and be encouraged to be present during hospitalizations and emergency department visits, as well as during medical procedures. Pediatricians should share medical information with children and families except when inappropriate, and should include family preferences in the care plan, resulting in greater patient and family awareness and satisfaction with their care.
