Description

The main goals of this course are to help pediatricians recognize the value of early identification and intervention when developmental delays are suspected and to identify the key surveillance and screening steps they should incorporate into their practice.

This course is organized in 3 units.

Unit 1: The Basics of Developmental Surveillance and Developmental Screening


Upon completion of Unit 1, you will be able to

  • Increase knowledge of developmental delays and the significance of detecting developmental delays early in a child's life.
  • Define the 6 steps of developmental surveillance and describe the importance of applying the steps to identify developmental delays.
  • Identify the differences/similarities between developmental surveillance and developmental screening and how the 2 processes complement one another to identify children at risk for developmental delays.
  • Apply strategies for incorporating developmental surveillance into practice.
  • Recognize the opportunity that the surveillance and screening process presents for building strong relationships with patients' families.
  • Identify resources available to support physicians and patients during developmental surveillance activities.


Unit 2: Case Study—Raj


Upon completion of Unit 2, you will be able to

  • Increase knowledge of developmental delays and the significance of detecting developmental delays early in a child's life.
  • Identify the differences/similarities between developmental surveillance and developmental screening and how the 2 processes complement one another to identify children at risk for developmental delays.
  • Apply strategies for incorporating developmental surveillance into practice.
