Pediatricians may (often unknowingly) have systems or ways of practicing in place that make LGBTQ+ youth uncomfortable about forming a strong doctor-patient relationship. Except for very recent graduates, pediatricians likely haven’t had formal education on prescribing PrEP or guiding transgender youth through social transition, much less medical transition with gender affirming hormones or puberty blockers. Many physicians are uncomfortable with doing complete, explicit sexual health histories with LGBTQ+ youth nor are many pediatricians knowledgeable about gender or sexuality concerns in a developmentally appropriate manner. Most pediatricians have never been taught how to work with families who don’t (or even who do) accept their child’s LGBTQ+ identity. Rarely do pediatricians consider LGBTQ+ concerns in young children.
