The use of flavoring in cigarettes and e-cigarette solutions is a major driver of youth tobacco use and exposure. To curb the use of these products by children, the AAP recommends a ban on all characterizing flavors, including menthol, in e-cigarettes. In April 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes, as well as all non-tobacco flavors in cigars.

From the AAP’s policy statement on e-cigarettes:

“E-cigarette solutions are often flavored, with thousands of unique flavors advertised. Popular options include fruit, candy, and dessert flavors and are appealing to children and youth. Availability of flavors is among the most prominently cited reasons for youth e-cigarette use.”
