WiN aims to form a national network of women neonatal intensivists, promote women in neonatology into leadership positions, improve communication and support for women in neonatology, support research and educational endeavors, and support mentoring and advocacy for gender inequity and disparity. This will help minimize workforce issues in Neonatology.
Message from WiN Leadership
Women now comprise HALF the members of the Section on Neonatal Perinatal Medicine. Women constitute 75% of the incoming neonatology fellows this year. Although we have reached gender balance in our subspecialty, we are far from gender equity, particularly in remuneration and in holding leadership positions. The average salary disparity for women was $30,000/year even after adjusting for years post fellowship and clinical duties, representing $900,000 over a 30-year career (Savich and Horowitz 2016). Only about 15% of Neonatology Division Chiefs are women. Women occupy a disproportionately small fraction of professorships, NICU Medical directorships, and other responsible leadership positions. The subspecialty clearly needs secure its future by valuing and utilizing this pool of talent. The SoNPM must engage and develop women to their full potential if Neonatal Perinatal Medicine is to maintain its position as one of the most evidence based, innovative, financially sound, technologically advanced, and prestigious subspecialties in pediatrics
Mission
The Women In Neonatology (WiN) of the AAP Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (SONPM) was formed to promote the wellness and careers of women in neonatology. The mission is to create a network of women in neonatology to foster leadership and professional development, as well as research, education, clinical care and advocacy in our field of neonatal-perinatal medicine.
Belief
We believe that women in neonatology are poised to lead a community of neonatologists who will provide a future of outstanding care for our patients and their families, and leading our field with innovation, intentional growth, personal development and global influence. We propose a dynamic roadmap of progress to overcome traditional roles and gender disparity by investing effort in the following areas:
Advocacy, Career Development, Communication, Health/Wellness, Leadership, and Networking

We support Women Neonatologists
