Section Milestones

2010
• Provisional Section approved by the AAP Board of Directors

• Section begins with 40 charter members and has 866 members today

• Section develops communication tools for members: list serv, Web page, newsletter
2011
• Section launches first educational program at NCE

• Andy Schuman showcases new gadgets at NCE's Office of the Future

• SOATT writes about non-traditional pediatric careers for the young physician newsletter
2012
Section showcases a parent (Lindsey Elsaesser) at NCE program to talk about pediatric clinical trials from the parent's perspective
2013
• Section creates a forum for scientific research abstracts, which are showcased @ the NCE. To date, 200 papers have been submitted, reviewed, scored and many showcased at NCE both in oral and poster formats. Posters have been showcased in several different areas of the NCE space including the exhibit hall and convention centers so that attendees (other than those attending the SOATT H program) can view.

• Section changes its bylaws to accept affiliate members who are PHARMD's and other health care providers

• Section offers its first webinar on Gadgets & Gizmo's for the Pediatric Office with Andy Schuman; over 100 register. Can view on-demand

• Section approved to be full Section of the AAP

• 2013 SOATT expands its reach at the NCE by offering a plenary with Stephen Spielberg on the Importance of Pediatric Research and a Gadgets & Gizmo's session….sold out!

• Section participates in Resident Career Day at NCE (Toback, Schuman)
2014
• Section publishes a brochure for parents on "what is a pediatric clinical trial?"

• Section holds its first section election

• Section is now regularly collaborating with section on clinical pharm, committee on drugs, committee om pediatric research, NCE planning Group

• Section gives its first annual award for pediatric innovation

• Section convenes the Stakeholder Forum, an international effort to explore the development of a pediatric clinical trials network. The Forum is an overwhelming success. Groups writes consensus statement to: Establish a Global Pediatric Clinical Trials Network and are committed to engage in the work to create and sustain it.

• Section offers Webinar on Pediatric Product Development Processes: FDA and GLobally with Lynn Yao and Dianne Murphy. Webinar available on-demand.

2015
• Section abstracts published in Pediatrics

• Section publishes a paper in Pediatric Research on the Stakeholder Forum to study the formation of a Global Pediatric Clinical Trials Network. Kathleen Neville appointed by AAP to serve on Critical Path's team to create Network.

• Dianne Murphy gives session at NCE on the Role of the FDA in Issues Facing Practicing Pediatricians
2016
• Parent joined SOATT executive committee as advisor

• Section receives Section Innovation Award from the AAP during the 2016 Annual Leadership Forum
2017
• The Section formalized a new liaison relationship between SOATT and the AAP Council on Clinical Information Technology.

• The Section formalized a new liaison relationship between SOATT and the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group.

• The Section expanded their membership base by adding medical students, pediatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants. 
2018
• AAP President presents How the AAP Engages Families during the iCAN Summit, organized by SOATT.

• SOATT presents Peds 21 at the AAP National Conference on Leveraging Technology to Transform Child Health
2019
• The Section formalized a new liaison relationship between SOATT and the AAP Section on Early Career Physicians.
• The Section creates Chair-Elect position to improve transition of leadership.
• The Section exceeds the 1,000 member count goal.
2020
• Section receives Membership Award at 2020 AAP Annual Leadership Forum.
2021
• The Southwest National Pediatric Device Innovation Consortium (SWPDC) and SOATT offered a $20,000 Pediatric Device Prize to foster the innovation of pediatric medical devices specifically designed for children. Soo (won, MD, FAAP from the SOATT executive committee was approved to review applications.
• The winners of the new SWPDC and AAP SOATT Pediatric Device Prizes for 2021 are:
• IndepENEMA - Dr. Jason Van Batavia - Children's Hospital of Philadelphia / University of Pennsylvania - IndepENEMA are adaptive assist devices for children and adolescents with neurogenic bowel and fecal incontinence. They allow for use of the cone enema system on any toilet bowl for pediatric patients with dexterity and strength limitations, which can lead to improved patient independence.
• (In addition, due to available funding, we recently were able to add a 2nd winner to the 2021 cycle)
• Devices for Blow by Oxygen - Dr. Ronald Day - Primary Children's Hospital / University of Utah - Devices for Blow by Oxygen are developing several devices to refine the delivery of blow by oxygen to pediatric patients who cannot keep a nasal cannula or facemask in place. The initial target patient populations are those with pulmonary hypertension and those with developmental delay.
• The Section fielded a survey of the membership to better gage usage of current benefits and services and to ask members what they want from the Section in preparation for this Fall's strategic planning.
2022

• Winners of the SWPDC and AAP SOATT Pediatric Device Prizes for Fall 2022:
  • $25,000 - Luminoah Inc - Hill Johnson (Charlottesville, VA)
    The enLumin from Luminoah is a portable, intuitive, and connected device for enteral nutrition in pediatric patients that require tube feeding. The system includes 3 main components: the enLumin Enteral Feeding Pump, the enLumin Daily Administration Set, and the enLumin Smartphone Application.
  • $25,000 - Pyrames - Xina Quan (Cupertino, California)
    The Boppli is a non-invasive wearable device for neonatal ICU patients for continuous blood pressure monitoring with minimal skin contact and serves as an alternative to arterial catheters and inflatable cuffs. Clinical studies in pediatric patients are ongoing.
  • $10,000 (in kind support) - Glimpse Diagnostics LLC - Courtney Hill, MD (Arden Hills, MN)
    Glimpse is a combined hardware and software solution for enabling telehealth treatment at home for pediatric ear infections that accommodates anatomy and specific needs for eardrum visualization.
2023
• H-Program hosted at NCE with a panel discussion entitled "Ok Boomer, Ok Zoomer"
• Winners of the SWPDC and AAP SOATT Pediatric Device Prizes for Fall 2023:
  • KidTech, Inc (Houston, TX)
    (idTech is working to develop a safe and highly effective lightweight baby-friendly mobile phototherapy system that allows continuous treatment without interruptions of breastfeeding and parent-child bonding.
  • Vascular Perfusion Solutions, Inc (San Antonio, TX)
    Vascular Perfusion Solutions (VPS) is working on a perfusion device intended to extend the viability of pediatric hearts longer than the standard of care.
2024
• Collaboration with COCIT to host AI webinar series
• Multiple SOATT members selected to work on Digital Medicine Society (DiME) Pediatric Playbook
• SOATT co-sponsored a Top 10 Resolution the Formation of an American Academy of Pediatrics lnnovation Center to Establish the United States as a Clobal Leader in Pediatric Healthcare Transformation during the 2024 Leadership Conference
