It is a true honor to serve as your Chair for the next two years. The AAP Section on Hospital Medicine (SOHM) is a vibrant and rapidly growing community. With nearly 3,000 members, we are on track to become the largest AAP Section in the near future. Together, we bring deep expertise in high-value care, leadership, medical education, quality improvement, and beyond — but our greatest strength lies in one another. Our diverse perspectives, collaborative spirit, and commitment to supporting each other define who we are.

As Niccole Alexander reminds us, pediatric hospitalists never shy away from a challenge. Our collective curiosity, creativity, and courage to tackle the hard things will guide us through the evolving challenges facing our field and the children we serve. Accordingly, the key themes of my term will center on strengthening our connections, sense of community, and professional belonging.

Having practiced in a wide range of settings — from community hospitals and newborn nurseries to PICUs, NICUs, intermediate care, and university-based programs — I’ve found a profound sense of professional belonging within SOHM. My goal is to help every member, regardless of practice type, geography, background, or board certification, experience that same sense of home. SOHM is the professional home for all inpatient pediatrics.

You can expect from me open and frequent communication, initiatives to foster connection, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to teamwork. I am deeply grateful for the mentorship of past chairs, especially Dr. Rachel Marek, whose inclusive leadership will continue to benefit us all in her role as past chair. I am also honored to collaborate with our talented Executive Committee, our subcommittee and task force leaders, conference planners, journal editors, listserv and library managers, and the AAP staff.
Most importantly, I look forward to learning from all of you. Your ideas and perspectives are vital to shaping our future. Please reach out to me directly with your thoughts — it’s essential that every voice in pediatric hospital medicine continues to be heard.

With appreciation,

Jessie Allan
