Child Abuse and Neglect Partners and Resources

Partners

Preventing child abuse and neglect, and caring for children who have been abused and neglected is a collaborative effort among pediatricians, other pediatric health care providers, public health agencies, child welfare, community partners and other professions. The Council on Child Abuse and Neglect regularly partners with these professions on advocacy, education and policy development. Learn more about our partners below:  

• American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) Trauma and Child Abuse Resource Center
  The AACAP Trauma and Child Abuse Resource Center provides pediatricians, other physicians, non-physician clinicians and families with tools, resources and information about child abuse. The Resource Center provides facts for families, clinical resources, scientific articles and information and resources for getting help. All resources are free and available to the public.
• American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC)
  The APSAC is a nonprofit national organization focused on meeting the needs of professionals engaged in all aspects of services for maltreated children and their families. This site provides resources, publications, initiatives and training opportunities for multi-disciplinary professionals in the care and prevention of child abuse and neglect.
• Futures Without Violence
  Futures Without Violence (Futures) has led the way and set the pace for ground-breaking education programs, national policy development, professional training programs and public actions designed to end violence against women, children and families around the world. Futures has excellent resources for screening for Intimate Partner Violence and resources for children and families living with domestic violence.
• International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect
  A multidisciplinary international organization that brings together a worldwide cross-section of committed professionals to work toward the prevention and treatment of child abuse, neglect and exploitation globally. Home of the journal, Child Abuse and Neglect.
• National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC)
  The Academy has endorsed the NCMEC's Guidelines for Programs to Reduce Child Victimization. To view the document in PDF format, visit the NCMEC's website and select "Education and Resources."
• Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA)
  Prevent Child Abuse America is the nation’s oldest and largest organization committed to preventing child abuse and neglect before it happens. ​We promote programs and resources informed by science that enable kids, families, and entire communities to thrive—today, tomorrow, and for generations to come. 
• The Ray Helfer Society
  A honorary society of physicians seeking to provide leadership to enhance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of child abuse and neglect.

• State Child Abuse & Neglect (SCAN) Policies Database
  The State Child Abuse & Neglect (SCAN) Policies Database includes updated state statutes regarding child abuse and neglect definitions for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The SCAN Policies Database—a collaboration between Child Trends and Mathematica, with funding from the federal Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation—is a resource to help researchers, analysts, policymakers, child welfare agencies and others examine differences in states’ child maltreatment definitions and policies.
• What Is Child Welfare? A Guide for Health-Care Professionals
  This brief factsheet was written for health-care professionals—including pediatricians, family practice providers, hospital nurses, school nurses, urgent care clinicians and other health-care professionals—to provide an overview of the field of child welfare and to suggest ways that health-care professionals and child welfare workers can work together to promote better outcomes for children and families involved with child welfare, including children in foster care. Links to resources are also included.
• The Quarterly 
  The Quarterly Update, published by The Ray E. Helfer Society, is a journal that reviews recent peer-reviewed articles in the medical literature on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.
• Child Maltreatment Report 2023
  This report presents national data about child abuse and neglect known to child protective services agencies in the United States during federal fiscal year 2023.
• CAPNET
  CAPNET conducts rigorous, multi-center research in order to make the care of potentially abused children and their families more effective, safe and fair.
• Planned Parenthood
  Planned parenthood seeks to ensure all people have access to the care and resources they need to make informed decisions about their bodies, their lives and their futures. This includes information and resources on sexual consent and sexual assault.
• Love is Respect
  Love is respect is the national resource to disrupt and prevent unhealthy relationships and intimate partner violence by empowering young people through inclusive and equitable education, support and resources.
• RAINN
  RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE, online.rainn.org y rainn.org/es) in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
• TeensHealth
  TeensHealth is run by Nemours Children’s Health and is committed to transforming the health of children by going beyond medicine to improve the health of the world in which every child lives. We founded KidsHealth.org and TeensHealth.org in 1995.
• Sex, Etc.
  Sex, Etc. is published by Answer, a national organization that provides and promotes unfettered access to comprehensive sexuality education for young people and the adults who teach them. Learn how you can support better sex education at the Answer website.
• Scarleteen
  Founded in 1998, as of 2022, Scarleteen.com is visited by a few million diverse people each year -- thousands of whom we speak with directly in our direct services and in-person outreach each year -- most between the ages of 15 and 30. It is often the most popular and most widely used site specifically providing sex and relationships information and support for young people worldwide and has been so through most of its tenure.
