Children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) have an increased risk of chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional conditions and may require supports and services beyond that required by children generally.

- This population also encompasses children/youth with disabilities, chronic conditions, and medical complexity. Examples include autistic children, children with epilepsy, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, among others.

- About 20%-26% of children in the United States has a special health care need.

- 87% of CYSHCN do not receive care in a well-functioning system, or in other words, do not feel that the current health care system is meeting their needs.

- Close to 61% of CYSHCN do not have access to a medical home, the standard model of care for all children, including CYSHCN.
