Assess
Head circumference, weight, and length using growth charts
- Babies should gain ½ lb per week.
- Infants gain approximately 1 inch per month during this time.
Screen for food insecurity using the validated 2-question Hunger Vital Sign tool
- 1 in 7 children live in a household experiencing food insecurity.
- Rates of food insecurity are higher in households with children younger than 6 years, single-parent households, and immigrant, Black or Latinx families.
- Provide resources for families experiencing fod insecurity. (Table 3)
Discuss
- Continuing exclusive breastfeeding or formula feeding without supplemental water or juice.
- There is little evidence that partially or extensively hydrolyzed formula prevents atopic disease, even in high-risk infants.
- Ask mothers who are working whether allowances are made in the workplace for breastfeeding support. Federal law requires providing breaks and adequate place for expressing human (breast) milk.
- Breastfed infants continue to require 8 to 12 feedings per day.
- Daily formula intake should increase from 24 oz (at 1 month) to 30 to 32 oz (by 4 months).
Calculations
Estimated energy requirements (kcal/d) for infants 0 to 2.99 months (weight in kg; height in cm)
- Males: −716.45 − (1.00 × age) + (17.82 × height) + (15.06 × weight) + 200
- Females: −69.15 + (80.0 × age) + (2.65 × height) + (54.15 × weight) + 180
