Pediatric drugs for children and adolescents differ from adult drugs in multiple aspects of drug use and response. Approval of pediatric drugs requires studies to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of drugs for specific indications in this population. Demonstrating appropriate dosing and formulations for children and adolescents of specific ages is also required.
There are opportunities in pediatric drug development to promote equity by ensuring that all children, youth, and adolescents have access to safe and effective medications. Addressing disparities in healthcare access and research participation can contribute to more inclusive and equitable pediatric healthcare.
