Neonatal Education for Prehospital Professionals (NEPP) is a new online True Adaptive eLearning course from the American Academy of Pediatrics designed to prepare prehospital clinicians to confidently assess, resuscitate, and stabilize newborns in out-of-hospital settings.
This five-module, self-paced course addresses the unique challenges of neonatal emergencies in the field, helping EMS clinicians build foundational knowledge, clinical judgment, and confidence when caring for newborns during the critical first minutes of life.

- Initial Assessment
- Neonatal Resuscitation
- Post Delivery Care and Complex Newborn Conditions
- Systems of Care, Documentation and Family/Provider Support
Why Take the NEPP Course?
Neonatal resuscitation in out-of-hospital emergency settings differs significantly from care provided in hospitals. Prehospital providers must perform rapid assessments, initiate life-saving interventions, and coordinate transport, often with limited resources, minimal support, and heightened emotional stress for families.
As the number of out-of-hospital births continues to rise, the need for targeted neonatal education for EMS clinicians has never been greater. The NEPP course was developed to address this growing need by focusing on the knowledge, clinical judgment, and decision-making skills required to manage neonatal emergencies safely in the field.
The course emphasizes practical application, reinforcing key concepts such as effective ventilation, recognition of less common neonatal conditions, post-delivery stabilization, documentation, and communication with families and receiving facilities. By combining evidence-based content with True Adaptive Learning technology, the NEPP course ensures learners are efficiently prepared, regardless of prior neonatal experience.
