NRP Instructors noted the need for tools and resources to assist with course planning and preparation, in addition to continuous and ongoing educational experiences. Based on this feedback, the NRP Steering Committee developed the NRP Instructor Renewal curriculum. The Renewal curriculum offers several benefits, including:
- All instructional resources in one location in the Instructor Toolkit
- Online exam access for instructors, including continuing education credit
- Online Instructor Course access to instructor candidates and current NRP Instructors
- NRP Live Webinars
- Downloadable PDFs of most commonly used documents and checklists for use in NRP Provider courses
-
Instructors do not need to maintain a separate NRP Provider eCard, however instructors at RQI for NRP institutions should also maintain their Essentials eCredential. To maintain their status, Instructors must complete the following before their renewal date every 2 years:
- Teach or co-teach 2 Instructor-led Events
- Purchase access (or get access through your institution's administrator) to the NRP 8th edition Instructor Renewal curriculum
- Successfully complete the online instructor activities
- Essentials Online Learning Assessment

-
No, Instructors are not required to purchase and complete the NRP 8th Edition Advanced Provider Curriculum as long as they maintain active Instructor status. NRP Instructors at an RQI for NRP hospital should also maintain their Essentials eCredential.
-
In order to maintain NRP Instructor status, Instructors are required to teach two NRP courses every two years and complete the Instructor Renewal every two years, based upon expiration date. If any of these criteria are not met, NRP Instructor status will not be renewed and status will go inactive. These requirements can be completed at any time during the 2-year time frame. If the requirements are met early, the Instructor will not be penalized by shortening their time frame. They will be renewed 60 days prior to their current expiration date, and the updated card will be extended by 2 years.
If an extension is requested, each case will be reviewed on a case by case basis, however there is no guarantee an extension will be granted. To request an extension, email nrp@aap.org.
-
The NRP Instructor Renewal curriculum requires completion of the Essentials and Advanced Online Learning Assessments, which are included in the Advanced Provider curriculum. To help give novice Instructors their best start, a mentoring component will be included within the NRP Instructor training program. Going forward, Instructor Mentors will play an integral role in the instructor training process and have full support of the NRP.
Mentors will share their experience and guide their mentees as they navigate the Instructor development process. This is an opportunity for experienced NRP instructors to take a strong leadership role in the development of new NRP Instructors and contributes to our ongoing goal of improving the quality of new NRP Instructors.
An NRP Instructor who has taught at least four NRP Instructor Led Events since completing all requirements to become an Instructor can become an Instructor Mentor. If an Instructor allows their Instructor status to lapse, they need to complete all of the Instructor requirements to once again become an active Instructor and teach 4 NRP Instructor-led Events before becoming an Instructor Mentor.
Instructor Mentors will be required to affirm an Instructor Candidate's qualifications, co-teach at least three courses with a candidate, and facilitate at least one "Debrief the Debriefer" session with the Instructor Candidate following a neonatal resuscitation simulation/debriefing event.
