Call for Nominations: 2027 Edwin L. Kendig, Jr. Award – deadline 4/7

The American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine (SOPPSM) is pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the 2027 Edwin L. Kendig, Jr. Award.

About the Award
Established in 2001 in honor of the remarkable legacy of Dr Edwin L. Kendig, Jr., pioneer in the study of pulmonary disease in children. Dr Kendig’s lifetime contributions to child health includes: founded and directed the first children’s chest clinic at the Medical College of Virginia, served as editor of the first North American textbook devoted to diseases of the chest in children, Disorders of the Respiratory Tract in Children, editor of the Virginia Medial Quarterly (formerly Virginia Medical Monthly) and authored/co-authored more than 200 scientific articles and editorials, co-editor of Pediatric Otolaryngology, contributing editor to seven other textbooks, served on numerous editorial boards, and was a guest lecturer in the United States and Internationally.
Dr. Kendig served the American Academy of Pediatrics at the Chapter, District, and National levels, including his tenure as AAP President (1978–1979). He was also a founding member of the Section on Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine (formerly the Section on Diseases of the Chest) and served on the AAP Committee on Continuing Medical Education.
Award Purpose
The SOPPSM will recognize one individual for lifetime achievement in the field of pediatric pulmonology. Any pulmonologist (or related specialty) may be nominated for this biannual honor.
Nomination Criteria
Nominees should meet one or more of the following qualifications:
- Distinguished clinical service and dedication to patient care
- Significant contributions to clinical or basic research in pediatric pulmonology
- Dedication to the education of pediatric pulmonary fellows or students
Notes:
- Previous nominees may be resubmitted with a brief letter identifying the nominator and nominee.
- Current SOPPSM Executive Committee members are not eligible for nomination.

An inscribed crystal award will be presented during the 2027 Celebration of Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine course.
Nomination Requirements
Each nomination must include:
- Completed Nomination Form
- A nomination letter detailing the nominee’s qualifications and key contribution
- A list of fellows/trainees the nominee has mentored
- The nominee’s curriculum vitae (CV)

Each nominator may submit one nomination.
