CPAC is a peer-reviewed tool that links CPTI gold-standard training objectives to Entrustable Professional Activity 11 for General Pediatrics as defined by the American Board of Pediatrics. EPA 11 states that pediatricians must “promote equitable care at the level of each individual patient and the population to address racism and other contributors to health inequities”.
Grounded in a socio-ecological model for health promotion and with a strong emphasis on health equity, our framework underscores the importance of understanding and intervening at multiple levels of society that impact child health and uses a framework for layers of advocacy to introduce comprehensive learning objectives within each layer. These objectives reflect the baseline knowledge required for every pediatrics resident in health advocacy.
The activities highlighted are typically unique to community pediatrics/advocacy rotations and are meant to provide exemplar curricular activities for a 4-week rotation specifically in community pediatrics and advocacy. We recognize and support that additional elements of health advocacy may and should be included across other rotations (i.e., adolescent medicine, developmental/behavioral pediatrics, hospital medicine, other inpatient specialty rotations, neonatal intensive care, etc.). However, there is unique added value of a dedicated community pediatrics and advocacy curriculum that includes opportunities to engage directly with communities, community-based organizations, local and/or state government officials, and media.
