The SOCC needs your membership and support. We do amazing things for children and their families and need your help to fight for key advocacy issues such as access to care, pediatric research, advancing pediatric drugs and devices, and reduction of medical errors and improved patient safety.
Advocacy
We need your help to amplify our voice on key advocacy issues. In the SOCC, you can:
- Add your voice to the PCCM community when you post critical care messages using #PedsICU
- Represent the SOCC at the AAP’s annual Legislative Conference and on Capitol Hill and learn how to better navigate the legislative process and strengthen the collective voice for kids. The Section awards $1,000 to a pediatric critical care fellowship trainee SOCC member each year
- Partner with the AAP Washington, DC office by becoming an AAP Key Contact for the SOCC
- Join the SOCC Advocacy Subcommittee and help coordinate systematic and timely advocacy on issues relevant to pediatric critical care such as World Sepsis Day
- Access member-only content in the twice-annual AAP Academic and Subspecialty Advocacy Report
- Collaborate on projects with other organizations such as the Pediatric Critical Care Colloquium, Society of Critical Care Medicine, World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies, Lurie Children’s Hospital on projects such as the joint SOCC‐Colloquium
- As an SOCC trainee, access an annual advocacy scholarship to attend the AAP Legislative Conference
Policy Statements
We develop life-saving policies and guidelines that are published in Pediatrics and address critical care needs for over 74 million children in the US. We also review other draft AAP policy statements in progress. Some examples include:
- Development of a joint policy statement with Society of Critical Care Medicine and the AAP Committee on Hospital Care on PICU admission, discharge, and triage
- SOCC Scientific Abstract & Educational Program during the AAP National Conference & Exhibition including programming for trainees, practice interviews and a job fair
- Cosponsorship of the Pediatric Critical Care Colloquium
- Cosponsorship of the Pediatric Critical Care Summit of the Americas
- Management of Pediatric Trauma
- Pediatric Organ Donation and Transplantation
- Guidelines for Developing Admission and Discharge Policies for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
- Pediatric Brain Death Determination Guidelines

- Partner with other organizations such as: the Society of Critical Care Medicine on topics such as pediatric brain death, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) on topics such as unscheduled procedural sedation, a brain death consensus conference and more.
