Welcome to the Section on LGBT* Health & Wellness.

The Section obtained "official" status within the AAP in March 2016. The Section held its first election the following year and new Executive  Committee members have been elected continually since.

The Section is strong and does important work because of the efforts of members. The Section has a Publication Review Committee that regularly responds to requests to review AAP policy, consumer information, and other publications.

Our mission is to support the health and wellness of:

  • LGBT children and their families
  • LGBT parents and their children
  • Children with variations in gender presentation and their families
  • LGBT pediatricians and trainees

The section obtained "official" status in the AAP in March 2016.The Section held its first election the following year and new executive committee membershave been elected continually since.

The Section hosts an education program at the annual National Conference & Exhibition. Poster sessions are included and authors present original research, educational programs, or community projects. The session also allows attendees time to mingle with other Section members and Academy leadership.

The Section on LGBT Health & Wellness led the AAP in partnering with the Human Rights Campaign and the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians to develop Supporting and Caring For Transgender Children, a co-branded educational resource that reviews what medical and education experts know about transgender children, explores some myths about gender transition in childhood, and offers suggestions for adults with a transgender child in their life. Several Section members contributed directly or provided editorial review for this valuable resource.

The Section is strong and does important work because of the efforts of members. The Section has a Publication Review Committee that regularly responds to requests to review AAP policy, consumer information, and other publications. Currently the Section is partnering with other AAP groups to develop policy on caring for transgender youth. Our membership continues to grow and we are excited to have medical students as members of the Section.

Finally, I am excited to share the image "We Care for ALL Children & Families" that can be displayed in an exam room, waiting room, or front window to show that your practice supports all children. Thank you for your interest in the Section, and for what you do every day on behalf of children.

Sincerely,

Christopher Harris, MD, FAAP
