Put Your Oxygen Mask on First: Health and Wellness of Healthcare Providers

Presented by Dena K. Hubbard, MD, FAAP, Hilary McClafferty, MD, FAAP, and Jochen Profit, MD, MPH

Recent literature recognizes that approximately 50% of physicians are suffering from burnout. Burnout is characterized as a syndrome of long term stress reaction that includes emotional exhaustion, loss of empathy, depersonalization, cynical or negative feelings towards work, and decreased feelings of personal achievement. Burnout affects provider wellness and not only takes a steep toll on the health and safety of physicians and multidisciplinary providers, but has negative effects on quality of care with increased medical errors, litigation, health care costs, and decreased patient satisfaction, adherence to physician recommendations, and provider productivity.  The system and delivery of healthcare has changed and many providers are struggling to retain their sense of purpose. This has become a public health issue.

Advocacy for the profession of medicine and healthcare providers will lead to better care for our pediatric patients, and help providers be more adaptable and positive in response to change and adversity in healthcare. The solution includes supporting providers individually while simultaneously analyzing and addressing the system issues at the institutional and national levels. Healthcare system level changes are required in order to make a sustainable impact on the incidence of burnout in healthcare providers.

Please join us to learn how caring for the caregiver can improve the quality of care for our patients. Dr. Dena Hubbard will describe the quality, humanitarian, and business cases for recognizing and addressing burnout, Dr. Hilary McClafferty will discuss the incidence of burnout in the pediatric workforce, and Dr. Jochen Profit will describe the WISER study and skills individuals can use to improve their resiliency. The webinar will conclude with a call to action for physicians,  healthcare providers, and our professional organizations to advocate for our patients by advocating for ourselves.  As instructed on every flight, “put your oxygen mask on first before assisting others.”
