The Section on Epidemiology, Public Health, and Evidence (SOEPHE), founded in 1988, is dedicated to educating the general pediatrician and pediatric subspecialist on the basic principles of epidemiology and its relation to pediatrics and its various disciplines. The Section consults to the AAP Board of Directors and works with various AAP Committees, Sections, and Task Forces to provide methodological support and expertise in epidemiology and evidence-based medicine.
Vision: It is the vision of the Section on Epidemiology, Public Health, and Evidence (SOEPHE) of the AAP that high quality research on pediatric populations and public health issues, coupled with informed use of data, will have a positive impact on the health of children.
Mission: The mission of the Section on Epidemiology, Public Health and Evidence is to serve as a home at the AAP to support all pediatricians, public health practitioners, and others, interested in public health and epidemiology to improve the health of children. The section’s core functions are to:
- Mentor and educate pediatricians on the use of epidemiologic and evidence-based medicine principles in the practice of pediatrics and public health and
- Provide methodological support for AAP efforts to produce evidence-based practice guidelines.
The SOEPHE Executive Committee holds Executive Committee meetings and sponsors educational programming at the AAP National Conference & Exhibition. Topics addressed at past educational programs have included clinical practice guideline development, outcomes research, controversies in maternal-fetal medicine, emerging problems in community pediatrics, critical appraisal of the literature, tobacco and opioids overdoses.
The Section produces a biannual newsletter, NewsBrief, to highlight the work of the section and its members. Section membership is open to members of the Academy and other licensed physicians and research scientists with an interest in epidemiology and public health.
