SOU Membership Criteria

Section Membership is open to the following Member types:

Fellowship Trainees who are currently enrolled in an approved pediatric urology fellowship program.

Candidate Members who have completed a pediatric urology fellowship and who are eligible, but not yet certified by the American or Canadian Boards of Urology.

International Members who are actively involved in the study of urology in infants, children, adolescents, or young adults and are interested in contributing toward the objectives of the Section. Applicants must be a pediatric urologist or pediatric surgeon outside of the U.S. or Canada and satisfy the following criteria:

A minimum of 50% of the applicant's work must be spent in the care of children with urologic diseases. This work can include teaching, research, and administration.
A 12-month surgical case log, signed by a Department/Division Chairperson, listing all cases (both adult and pediatric) in which the applicant acted as either the primary or responsible surgeon. Fifty percent of the procedures must have been performed in children and/or teenagers; case log should be submitted and approved by the membership committee.
1. Evidence of active membership in the Societies for Pediatric Urology may be provided in lieu of this requirement
A variance in membership criteria may be considered for applicants whose practice consists primarily of transitional urology and/or reconstructive urology in adults with complex congenital urologic conditions.

National Affiliates who are physicians assistants or nurse practitioners actively involved in some aspect in the study of urology in infants, children, or adolescents, and contribute toward the objectives of the section.

Senior Members of the Academy who are involved in pediatric urology.

Specialty Fellows are physicians actively involved in some aspect in the study of urology in infants, children, adolescents, or young adults and who are interested in contributing toward the objectives of the section.

To qualify*, Specialty Fellow applicants must:

Have completed an ACGME certified pediatric urology fellowship, or a fellowship approved by the Training, Education, and Evaluation Committee of the Canadian Urological Association adhering to the criteria and periodic review process as defined by the ACGME; AND
Submit documentation of certification in General Urology by the American Board of Urology, American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the European Board of Pediatric Urology; AND
Submit documentation of subspecialty certificate in Pediatric Urology by the American Board of Urology for all North American members who completed their fellowship after 2000.
1. If this cannot be met because fellowship was completed prior to 2000, applicants must fulfill:
  1. A minimum of 75% of the applicant's workweek must be spent in the care of children with urologic diseases. This work can include teaching, research, and administration.
  2. Submit a 12-month surgical case log, signed by a Department/Division Chairperson, listing all cases (both adult and pediatric) in which the applicant acted as either the primary or responsible surgeon. Seventy-five percent of the procedures must have been performed in children and/or adolescents.
    1. Evidence of an active membership in the Societies for Pediatric Urology may be provided in lieu of this requirement.
  3. A variance in membership criteria may be considered for applicants whose practice consists primarily of transitional urology and/or reconstructive urology in adults with complex congenital urologic conditions.

*If 1-3 above cannot be completed, applicant can submit:

Documentation that applicant is an Ibero-American Society of Pediatric Urology (SIUP) certified program faculty by the SIUP Accreditation and Training Committee or fellowship trained.
1. Applicant will require AAP Section on Urology Executive Committee approval.

Section Affiliate Membership
Urologists and health professionals in a related field (physicians, osteopathic physicians, nurses, research scientists, nephrologists, and physician assistants) who advance the care of pediatric urology patients, but who are not eligible for membership in the AAP.

Licensed physicians not eligible for Specialty Fellow Membership in the AAP who reside outside the borders of the United States and Canada.

Applicants must submit:

- Completed application
- Two sponsor letters from Fellows or Specialty Fellows. These sponsors must be members of the Section on Urology; one letter may be from an affiliate member.
- Letter from chief of service, documenting that the applicant devotes 50% of clinical activity to pediatric urology.

Nurses, osteopathic physicians, nephrologists, physician assistants, and other physicians who advance the care of pediatric urology patients but who are not eligible for national membership in the Academy

Applicants must submit:

- Completed application
- Two sponsor letters from Fellows or Specialty Fellows. These sponsors must be members of the Section on Urology; one letter may be from an affiliate member.
- Copy of medical license
- Copy curriculum vitae

Research scientists with a Masters or Ph.D. degree who devote at least 50% of research time to pediatric Urological or related diseases.

Applicants must submit:

- Completed application
- Two sponsor letters from Fellows or Specialty Fellows. One letter must be from the Head of the Pediatric Urology Division at your current place of employment. If the head of the Division is a Fellow of the AAP, only two letters are needed.
- A log of all research projects worked on for the past year and the approximate amount of time devoted to each project.
- A summary listing all research projects that you have directed/presented at national scientific meetings.
