Advanced Pediatric Life Support Faculty

The Course Director is responsible for selecting and appointing an Equipment Manager if needed. The person selected must be familiar with the skills taught and the equipment used in the Skill Stations. An appropriate health care professional may be a trauma, critical care, pediatric, or emergency nurse.​

​Responsibilities of APLS Equipment Manager

• Review the Skill Station information found on the Instructor's ToolKit CD-ROM or PDFs below to identify what equipment will be required for the course.
• Work with the Course Director to develop an equipment list that indicates the quantity of each item needed, source of obtaining items, and loan or purchase information.
• Develop an equipment budget and submit it to the Course Director.
• Maintain invoices and receipts for all equipment.
• Arrange for loan or purchase of equipment as appropriate.
• Work with the Course Director and/or other Faculty to set up equipment for all Skill Stations.​

APLS faculty should be multidisciplinary and include at least one board-certified pediatrician and one board-certified emergency physician. A pediatric emergency physician can fill both of these roles. It is further recommended that the faculty include physicians subboarded in pediatric emergency medicine and/or dually certified in pediatrics and emergency medicine.

If the optional Advanced Trauma Procedures Skill Station is to be implemented, it is recommended that the Faculty have experience performing the procedures, and at least one pediatric surgeon should be included as faculty.​

Before the course:

• Review and prepare to present assigned sessions using the presentations on the Instructor's ToolKit CD-ROM.
• Review the corresponding chapters in the student resource manual, APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Resource, Fifth Edition.
• Review the principles of adult learning.
• Contact the Course Director with any questions about content or how the material should be presented.

On the day of the course:

• Meet with the Course Director and other faculty ​members to review the course schedule, course content, management of small group discussions and skill stations as well as any potential problems.
• Arrive at least 1 hour before presentations are scheduled.
• Notify the Course Director immediately if unable to participate in the course as planned.

During the course:

• Present the material in a manner that is consistent with the student resource manual and the Instructor's ToolKit CD-ROM.
• Answer questions about course content, or refer questions to the Course Director.
• Assist the Course Director with distribution and collection of course evaluation forms.
• Assist the Course Director with administration of the course completion examination.
