There are a number of medical specialties and subspecialties that care for children with developmental and behavioral conditions. Knowing the variations in clinical practice can help general pediatricians navigate referrals to subspecialists and other medical professionals.   

General Pediatrics

Leads medical home, promotes the child's overall health through preventive measures such as screenign an dvaccinations, and supports navigation to subspecialists.

Developmental - Behavioral Pediatrics

Provides medical care for children suspected of, at risk for, or known to have developmental and vehavioral disorders.

Neurology

Focuses on the brain and nervous system (especially epilepsy), and treats problems related to these areas.

Child Psychiatry

Addresses concerns related to mood, thinking, behavior, and manages medications to treat these issues.

Psychology

Provides expertise in complex medical issues that have psychological aspects.

Social Work

Provides expertise in family support, and naviages details of administrative support systems

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PMR)

Focuses on children with motor disorders, and provides related treatment (eg, adaptive equipment, botox, medicines).

Adolescent Medicine

Focuses on the physical, mental, and social well-being of  adolescents and young adults, between the ages of 11 and 21.
