Caregivers are often the first to notice a child’s developmental milestone. Awareness of and tracking of milestones can help to identify if a child significantly lags or misses a developmental milestone or loses a skill. When this happens, the pediatrician may suspect a developmental disability.
Developmental disabilities refer to a group of conditions. A pediatrician may conduct additional evaluation for disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or may refer to a developmental-behavioral pediatrician for evaluation.
In either case, families are encouraged to track their child’s milestones in order to identify behaviors that can be useful in determining a diagnosis. You also should seek early intervention services while you wait for a diagnosis, since early intervention has proven to be effective in helping children develop.
