Advancing Primary Care Provider Leadership in Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
The Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Provider Education Center (EHDI PEC) Emerging Leaders Provider Training Curriculum helps strengthen provider knowledge and confidence in engaging with the EHDI system through interdisciplinary leadership training and networking opportunities. This curriculum can be used by EHDI programs and other EHDI system partners to strengthen provider education efforts in state/territories. Users can tailor the curriculum for their own education and systems improvement efforts.
The content in the curriculum provides education and leadership skills to primary care providers who serve children, with a particular focus on those working in rural or medically underserved communities
Curriculum Learning Objectives
Upon completing the Emerging Leaders curriculum, participants will be able to:
- Identify EHDI system partners within their state/territory and their role within the EHDI system.
- Describe at least 2 strategies to partner with individuals and entities within the EHDI system, including state/territory EHDI programs, Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA) Part C early intervention services, family organizations, and d/Deaf mentorship programs.
- Understand their role in the early identification, diagnosis, and provision of services to infants, children, and families interacting with the EHDI system.
- Develop and enhance leadership skills to effectively engage and collaborate within the EHDI system.
Target Audience: Who Can Use this Curriculum and How
The content within the curriculum is specifically for primary care providers. However, the curriculum can be used by many EHDI system partners for primary care provider education efforts, including but not limited to:
- Primary care providers looking to learn about and strengthen their role in the EHDI system
- EHDI programs and partners seeking to offer primary care provider education
- Academic institutions and provider training programs seeking to integrate content specific to the care of deaf/hard of hearing children into their efforts
- Public health professionals, family organizations, and early intervention partners interested in interdisciplinary collaboration
The curriculum is adaptable to state and local needs, with downloadable PDF and PowerPoint materials that can be easily customized. Providers, AAP Chapters, EHDI programs, and training institutions may use these materials in several ways, including:
- Host “Lunch and Learns” with primary care providers and/or trainees to share content from the curriculum and adapt based on individual state/community needs
- Use these modules as the foundation for an Extension for Community Health Outcomes (ECHO) (telementoring) program for primary care and other provider types
- Use and adapt modules for grand rounds, CME, and/or other educational offerings
- … and many more!!
This list is not exhaustive and offers a few ideas to get started. If you are interested in using this curriculum and would like more guidance on where to start and how to implement, contact the AAP EHDI PEC program at [email protected].
