Before integrating systems to support adolescents and young adults (AYA), it is essential to understand the environment you’re working in. Every community is different, as are the systems, resources, and challenges that shape AYA experiences in that community.

Landscape analyses and needs assessments are complementary and overlapping processes that are best conducted together but serve distinct purposes.

• A landscape analysis helps you understand the local context, strengths, and existing partnerships.  
• A needs assessment identifies service gaps and priorities from the perspectives of AYA and those who care for them.
