The Pediatric Mental Health Education Center (PMHEC) aims to equip pediatric health clinicians with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to provide high-quality mental health care. To achieve this, the PMHEC offers a variety of educational and training opportunities, including live, virtual, and online learning experiences, with options for both cohort and independent learning. This comprehensive approach is designed to support learners at all stages of their professional development, ensuring they are well prepared to address the mental health needs of their patients.
PMHEC Recognition Program
Through this engaging, cohort-based program, participants build practical skills, deepen their knowledge, and grow their confidence alongside peers who share a commitment to improving mental health care for children and families.
The program includes three meaningful steps: a live training event with expert-led instruction and hands-on skill-building, self-directed independent learning tailored to individual interests, and an applied learning experience that brings new knowledge and real-world practice together.
Participants who complete all three steps, earning at least 20 hours of continuing medical education (CME) will be recognized for their commitment to advancing pediatric mental health care. In addition to AAP educational offerings, learners can also explore selected courses from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Why Participate in the Recognition Program?
Pediatricians are on the front lines of a rapidly evolving mental health landscape and are uniquely positioned to foster healthy mental development through the long-term relationships they build with children and families from infancy to young adulthood. Children and families look to their trusted care team for support and guidance with mental health concerns—making it essential for pediatricians to have the right knowledge and skills at their fingertips.
The PMHEC recognition program is designed for pediatricians who want to lead the way in whole-child care. This immersive training empowers you to:
|
Address a critical need as more children and teens experience mental health concerns |
|
Build practical, evidence-based skills you can apply in your practice |
|
Earn recognition for your commitment to pediatric mental health |
|
Stay current on emerging best practices and evolving patient needs |
|
Connect and collaborate with peers who share your commitment to children’s healthy mental development |
|
Help bridge gaps in access to mental health support and services |
|
Recognize and respond to children’s mental health needs with greater confidence |
|
Identify concerns earlier and have more effective conversations with families |
When you display your PMHEC recognition program badge, you demonstrate to families that you are dedicated to every aspect of their children’s well-being. Nurturing a welcoming supportive environment can help families feel more comfortable discussing mental health. With stronger preparation in pediatric mental health, clinicians can deliver more connected, responsive, and effective care for children and families.
Scholarship Program
A limited number of scholarships are available for pediatric health care clinicians working in medically underserved areas (MUAs). These scholarships can help offset the cost of participating in eligible activities listed below. Individuals can also register for and participate in these activities without participating in the scholarship program--regardless of practice setting, practice type, or scholarship application status.
