What is ICD-10-CM?

ICD-10-CM (the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification) is a standardized system used to code diseases and medical conditions (morbidity) data. Healthcare providers use ICD-10-CM codes when diagnosing patients.

The ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee (C&M) meetings are held to discuss and approve coding changes for the ICD-10 system. The ICD-10 C&M is a Federal interdepartmental committee comprised of representatives from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The committee is responsible for approving coding changes, developing errata, addenda and other modifications. Requests for coding changes are submitted to the committee for discussion at either the Spring or Fall C&M meeting.

A presentation is made at the C&M meeting, which describes the clinical issues and the procedure or technology. The proposed changes will be considered for an April 1 or an  October 1 implementation date.

What is AAP Role?

AAP plays an important role in the ICD-10-CM process. AAP is one of just a few medical specialty societies who attend the ICD C&M meetings to be sure pediatricians are well represented at the table.

AAP ICD Team

The AAP has two ICD Advisors who attend the virtual meeting and are available to answer  questions that result from proposals.
