Your donations to the Friends of Children Fund inspire the next generation of pediatricians.

It takes passion and courage to become a pediatrician. The American Academy of Pediatrics is committed to developing a strong pathway into medicine—and we’re doing it thanks to your generous support. Here’s just one of the programs your gift made possible.

The AAP is further strengthening the workforce through its new Creating a Pathway to Pediatrics through Exposure, Education, and Knowledge program.

Sixty medical and pre-med students participated in the inaugural event in July 2025 where they shadowed physicians and practiced skills in simulations.

A nation of healthy children depends on a healthy pediatric workforce. That’s just one of the reasons it was so exciting to see a record number of residents fill pediatric positions during Match Day 2025. These soon-to-be pediatricians will quickly learn what an honor it is to care for children. But they’re also stepping into a profound role as the future beating heart of the profession.

With support from donors, this summer the AAP launched Creating a Pathway to Pediatrics through Exposure, Education, and Knowledge (PEEK), a program that introduces medical and pre-med students to clinical and nonclinical careers in pediatrics.

In July, we hosted our first-ever PEEK event in partnership with the University of Chicago Department of Pediatrics and four other Chicago-area institutions. Students participated in a two-and-a-half-day immersive experience on campus and in local hospitals.

Here’s what gifts to the AAP made possible:

  • 60 student attendees, mostly local but several from out of state.
  • 30 faculty mentors engaged in panels, hands-on learning, and career discussions.
  • Students explored careers in general pediatrics as well as 10+ pediatric subspecialties, shadowed physicians in the clinic, and practiced skills in simulation labs.

The impact was clear:

  • 98% of students who completed a post-event survey said that they agree or strongly agree that they intend to pursue a career in pediatrics.
  • 100% said they would recommend the program to others.

Faculty also shared how meaningful it was to connect with future pediatricians, re-connect with familiar colleagues and reaffirm their own passion for the field. Together, we are building a stronger, more diverse pediatric workforce for the future.

When you give to the AAP, you ensure that students not only discover the joy and satisfaction of a career in pediatrics but also find connection and community to sustain their journey. You’re strengthening the profession—and creating a healthier future for children.
