Description

This course equips pediatric health professionals with the knowledge and skills to deliver accurate, equitable ADHD diagnoses and effectively educate families about the implications of the condition. It fosters early detection, promotes thorough assessment of frequently co-occurring conditions, and deepens clinicians’ insight into the diverse ways ADHD manifests in children. By strengthening diagnostic competencies, clinicians enhance their ability to accurately identify ADHD, enabling the initiation of targeted, developmentally appropriate interventions.

Goals:

100% of patients diagnosed with ADHD 1) met DSM-5 criteria; 2) had symptoms and impairment that were obtained using DSM-based ADHD rating scales from 2 or more major settings; and 3) were assessed for conditions that mimic or are comorbid with ADHD.

100% of patients/families are offered ADHD education (conversation, print or web-based materials) upon diagnosis.

Course Learning Objectives:

Describe and apply the core DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for ADHD and identify the most common ways ADHD presents across pediatric patient populations.

Analyze how individual-level factors—including cultural context, linguistic background, gender identity, and neurodevelopmental history—influence diagnostic formulation and impact the accuracy and consistency of ADHD assessments.

Differentiate ADHD from other psychiatric, developmental, and medical conditions by evaluating the differential diagnosis and recognizing the most prevalent comorbidities in pediatric populations.

Implement evidence-informed educational components and supportive communication strategies when delivering an ADHD diagnosis in order to enhance family understanding, promote informed engagement, and support adherence to individualized care plans.
