Format
This course offers guidance for (1) generalist and (2) hospital-based pediatricians on optimizing the care provided to pediatric patients diagnosed with asthma. Focused on quality improvement (QI) methodology, the course presents current asthma guidelines, related policy statements, and other core materials and recommendations for the diagnosis and management of asthma. The content and QI methodology aim to change competencies with respect to establishing protocol for diagnosing asthma; initiating, maintaining, or adjusting medications; supporting patients with developing self-management skills; and following up regularly to monitor asthma control.
Generalist Track
Millions of children are diagnosed with asthma. Although asthma is currently not curable, symptoms can be controlled. This course is designed to provide you with guidance regarding asthma diagnosis, its control and follow-up, spirometry testing and measurement, medications administration, flu vaccination, asthma action plan development, and active partnership between providers. This track features diagnosis and management guidance from National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s National Asthma Education and Prevention Program.
Hospitalist Track
Asthma is the third leading cause of pediatric hospitalization for children under the age of 15 years. In this course, we provide recommendations for the initial assessment and management of children and youths hospitalized with an asthma exacerbation. This includes the use of clinical and objective measurements to monitor response to therapy; introducing and reinforcing asthma education to equip patients and families with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand, treat, and keep the disease under control; and recommendations concerning discharging patients from the hospital following treatment for an asthma exacerbation.
