Description

This course will provide an overview of developmental surveillance and address gaps in knowledge and performance that exist among pediatric clinicians related to routinely conducting developmental surveillance at each health supervision visit. The content will provide an overview of AAPs clinical report for incorporating developmental surveillance in the practice setting and how surveillance and screening support each other in early identification of children at risk for developmental delays and disabilities. Topics covered will include strategies for incorporating the components of surveillance into a practice workflow, ways to partner and communicate with families about developmental milestones and identifying concerns, and how to utilize a team-based approach to implement developmental surveillance.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to

  • Describe developmental surveillance, understanding that it includes 6 components.
  • Describe how developmental surveillance and screening are different yet complementary.
  • Explain strategies for integrating developmental surveillance into your practice.
  • List the recommended ages for universal developmental screening.
  • Detect when screening and early interventions are beneficial for the child.
