Description

The increase in opioid use during pregnancy has been paralleled by an increase in the number of infants diagnosed with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) at birth. Children with prenatal opioid and other substance exposures may be at increased risk for developmental delays and other medical, developmental, and social challenges. Optimizing long-term outcomes for these infants requires coordinated, family-centered care that supports not only the infant, but also the caregiver and family throughout the transition from the birth hospital to the pediatric medical home. As pediatricians are often the primary link to the healthcare system for the mother-infant dyad, they are uniquely positioned to coordinate care, facilitate access to treatment and community resources, and promote healthy family outcomes.
