Format
This is an evidence‑informed course that equips pediatric clinicians with practical, respectful, and nonjudgmental strategies to counsel families about secure firearm storage. The course provides universal guidance for families of children and adolescents, integrating firearm injury prevention into routine pediatric care alongside other anticipatory guidance. Through short videos, counseling scenarios, interactive knowledge checks, and downloadable tools, learners explore the epidemiology of pediatric firearm injury, youth access and storage practices, and evidence‑based harm‑reduction approaches. The course also reviews secure storage options for homes and vehicles, introduces relevant policy tools, and reinforces clinicians’ role as trusted partners in preventing injury and promoting safer environments for children.
Learning Objectives
This course builds on the original 2021–2024 Safer Course, which was developed by Vanderbilt University Medical Center with generous support from the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Friends of Children Fund.
