Description

One of the simplest ways that parents can make daily decisions that have a lasting impact on their children’s health is by using the Nutrition Facts label on food and beverage packages.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has developed an online course consisting of four videos. Medical Education (CME) credit is awarded [1 credit per learner] upon completion of the evaluation. MOC Part 2 credit is not available for this learning activity.

The objective of this course is to educate pediatricians and other pediatric healthcare professionals and provide them with strategies and tools to counsel parents and caregivers about using the Nutrition Facts label to make informed food choices that support the growth, development, and lifelong healthy dietary practices of their children.

After completing the CME activity, pediatricians should be able to:

  • Review the purpose of the Nutrition Facts label as regulated by FDA.
  • Understand and explain the serving information, calories, and % Daily Value sections on the Nutrition Facts label.
  • Recognize the various nutrients listed on the Nutrition Facts label and explain their association with certain health conditions.
