This ECHO aim to equip pediatricians and other healthcare professionals with Knowledge and skills around screening, referral pathways, and treatment options to address substance use concerns in adolescents.
Substance Use Treatment Frameworks
Participants will be able to:
- Introducing key frameworks for substance use treatment
- Trauma-informed care
- Harm reduction
- Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT).
- Describe the scope of the problem of substance use in adolescents and recognize the impact of substance use on the developing adolescent brain.
- Practice applying key skills with an initial case.
Adolescent Tobacco/Nicotine (and Cannabis) Use
Participants will be able to:
- Understand and be able to recognize different forms of nicotine/tobacco and other drugs
- Understand harms associated with use.
- Increase awareness of prevention and intervention curricula and resources and how to use them in practice.
Alcohol and Cannabis
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the scope of the problem of alcohol use and cannabis use in adolescents and recognize the impact of substance use on the developing adolescent brain.
- Leverage key frameworks for substance use treatment (trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and SBIRT) in the treatment of cannabis use.
- Practice applying these skills with an initial case.
Opioids: Overdose Prevention and Treatment
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the recent trends in youth overdose and opioid use disorder
- Identify 2 strategies to reduce the risk of overdose
- Discuss 3 benefits of medication treatment for opioid use disorder.
Stimulants and Treatment
Participants will be able to:
- Discuss the trends in stimulant use among adolescents.
- Identify the impact of stimulant use on adolescent health.
- Understand emerging pharmacotherapy for stimulant use disorders.
Treating Polysubstance Use Disorders
- Identify commonly misused substances in adolescents.
- Discuss the impact on adolescents’ physical and mental health.
- Describe an approach to treatment and potential treatment options.
