Adolescent and young adult substance use is a critical pediatric health issue because it often begins during a developmental period marked by rapid brain, social, and emotional growth. Substance use can affect safety, mental health, school functioning, family relationships, and long-term well-being, and it may increase the risk for injury, overdose, infectious disease exposure, and progression to substance use disorder.
This course series prepares pediatric trainees and clinicians to respond to substance use with evidence-informed, developmentally appropriate, and nonjudgmental care.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to
Describe current and evolving epidemiologic patterns of adolescent substance use, including emerging substances, changing modes of use, and associated risk and protective factors.
Summarize key recommendations from existing and emerging clinical practice guidelines for screening, brief intervention, and treatment.
Demonstrate developmentally appropriate, patient-centered counseling and prevention strategies, using motivational interviewing techniques with approaches that recognize substance use within the broader context of a young person’s life and experiences.
Use evidence-based clinical pathways to identify and manage adolescent substance use, including assessing co-occurring mental health conditions (eg, ADHD, anxiety, depression), evaluating the need for medications for substance use disorders, and coordinating care with behavioral health and substance use services.
Implement evidence-based treatment strategies for adolescents presenting with co-use or polysubstance use, including tailoring interventions based on clinical complexity, managing withdrawal when appropriate, and promoting safety and continuity of care.
