Description

Currently, pediatricians, residents, and their clinical teams have limited access to structured training in attuned communication and self-compassion, which are essential for delivering attuned, respectful, family-centered care and supporting pediatricians’ well-being. This 4 module series is designed to enhance pediatricians’ and clinical teams’ knowledge and application of attuned communication, reflective practice, and mindful self-regulation strategies. The Facilitating Attuned Interactions (FAN) model supports the development of communication and reflective skills and provides a relational framework that fosters attunement and strengthens the therapeutic alliance with families. The FAN model emphasizes that pediatric care is often a relationship journey rather than a series of tasks aimed at immediately “fixing” problems. By applying FAN principles, pediatricians can effectively hold space for families’ experiences, respond empathetically, and build trust over time, enhancing both family engagement and the delivery of mental health and developmental support.

Please note: Continuing medical education (CME) and maintenance of certification (MOC) part 2 credit for this course is claimed in increments of 1:00 credits per module completed for a total of 4:00 CME credits and 4:00 MOC Part 2 points when completing all 4 modules.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Module 1: Describe the core components of the Facilitating Attuned Interactions (FAN) framework and its alignment with AAP policy on mental health leadership competencies and the early relational health principles.
  • Module 2: Learn and apply attuned communication and self-regulation strategies.
  • Module 3: Use FAN framework to reach parents and patients' true concern.
  • Module 4: Integrate and personalize self-compassion and FAN concepts into clinical routines.
