International Donations Through Friends of Children Fund

The Friends of Children Fund is the charitable fund of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Contributions to the fund support AAP's charitable efforts, including efforts around the world. International programs sponsored by the Friends of Children Fund have included:

international disaster relief, Helping Babies Breathe, International Community Access to Child Health (I-CATCH), and the India Giani Fund.

  • In Haiti, the AAP has used disaster relief donations to work with the Haitian Pediatric Society (HPS) to rebuild the profession of pediatrics by supporting Haitian residents and pediatricians. In Pakistan, contributions from the Friends of Children Fund helped to vaccinate 13,000 children against typhoid.

  • The World Health Organization estimates that 1 million babies die each year from birth asphyxia, or the inability to breathe immediately after delivery. Helping Babies Breathe teaches birth attendants simple resuscitation measures that can save millions.

  • The ICATCH program gives financial and technical support to pediatricians in developing countries that are in the process of developing and implementing a community-based child health initiative.

  • Resident Elective Travel is a competitive award for young physicians who are in a 3 or 4-year pediatric residency training program and have an interest in working in another country. Past awardees have done programs in Brazil, Costa Rica, India, Peru, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia.

  • The India Giani Fund helps train Indian pediatricians practicing neonatology in India by supporting their attendance to the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) conference or to the “Hot Topics in Neonatology in December.” All scholars are also given the opportunity to rotate through a state-of-the-art NICU in a university teaching hospital.

  • Corporations and businesses have the opportunity to show support of the AAP on multiple levels. To learn more, contact the Academy's Department of Development at development@aap.org or by phone at 888/700-5378.
